Yes, you read that headline right… everyone’s a winner in the cushion palooza! And that’s because everyone who entered now has a gorgeous new cushion! Congratulations!
What a great time we’ve had this last month…
- Over 230 cushions were made for the Palooza!
- Some were UFOs that turned out to be the perfect size to make a cushion – win!
- Some used techniques new to the maker – win win!
- Some makers even made their own pattern – score!
- And we can guarantee that all will be loved!
We knew early on we’d have a hard job judging the winners for this competition, so we’re glad we asked our friends over at Make Modern Magazine to help us out. The winners were chosen using a democratic points system, which meant we didn’t know who had won each prize until all the points were added up, making it pretty exciting for us too! It goes without saying that we would have given out hundreds of prizes if we could, but we’re thrilled to award the cushion palooza winners as follows:
Accuquilt Australia – Go! Fabric Cutter Starter Kit and Go! Qube Mix & Match 9″ valued at $759
Mary @poppinspatch made three gorgeous cushions for the Palooza, but it was this one that kept catching our eyes and making us a little bit weak at the knees! Mary has thrown everything at this cushion – machine piecing, hand quilting, applique and even a little felt – and the overall effect is perfect.
Let’s have a close up of that gorgeous detail…
“I adore this cushion. It is the kind of cushion I can actually imagine making myself! So inspiring – bright fabrics, combined with low volume and then add the hand-stitching. Fantastic job.”
“I’m a sucker for a plus block and then, there’s felt, low volume and hand stitching. Wow… just wow!”
Three Cotton & Steel FQ bundles from Clairs Fabrics – consisting of Trinket by Melodie Miller, Raindrop by Rashida Coleman-Hale and Print Shop by Alexia Abegg – valued at $400
Colby from @theauthenticstitch was on our recent “Five modern makers that consistently make us drool” list, so when she started making cushions for the palooza we knew we were in for a treat! She certainly didn’t disappoint, with four amazing cushions. Colby made the pattern for this one herself, and if we were giving prizes for best photo, she’d win that category too!
“Oh this cushion (and photo!) makes my heart sing. I love the combination of the lime green with the black and white fabrics. Incredible design – Colby’s own!”
“This is everything to me – the epitome of modern. The photo really makes this cushion pop as well. The fabric, the foundation paper piecing, the reverse applique and the matchstick quilting are all amazing. And then to top it off, this is her own pattern!”
Quilt By Starlight long arm custom quilting of one large lap size quilt, including Matilda’s Own batting, valued at $300
The Modern Makers team are notoriously *ahem* “outspoken”, so when we saw this sassy cushion from @tarasews we immediately fell in love! Tara is now thinking of doing a whole set of bossy cushions – we could help her out with a few choice phrases if necessary!
“My reaction when I first saw this cushion was to crack up laughing! Love this sense of humour. Tara has done an amazing job with the paper piecing and quilting. Awesome work.”
“I love love love this… Its funny, salty and so well made! If it lived in my house I would smile every time I sat my ass down!”
Victorian Textiles prize pack consisting of a Matilda’s Own Rotating Mat, 12″ x 6.5″ Matilda’s Own ruler (featuring very own laser cut “Modern Makers” logo!) and a Mettler thread pack, total value of $200
Bec of @skyberries also entered four colourful cushions in the palooza, but this one killed us with its cuteness!
“You’d think this many bright colours would jar but Bec’s little churn-dashes just work, right? Beautiful mono fussy cuts feature in the centre and tone-on-tone patterns and solids for the churn dashes. A deserving winner!”
“Ohhhh I love a rainbow… this is just gorgeously saturated and paired with the black and white – well its hard to go past!”
Clairs Fabrics FQ bundle of From Porto with Love by Sarah Watts, valued at $130
As well as the FQ bundle, @loveoffabrics may have won the cushion making record, with 8 cushions created for the palooza! But this cushion had us at…
“Am I the only one with Lionel Richie in my head right now? And now I know what to do with all the selvedges I have been hoarding … I mean saving. Great idea!”
“Jane would say Lionel Richie, I would say Adele! Such a great way to remember what fabric you have used with all those selvedges… And the pop of pink is so cute!”
Six month subscription to Make Modern Magazine
Because we struggled to narrow our shortlist down any further, our Make Modern Magazine friends very generously offered up five subscriptions! So congratulations to the following winners:
“Can’t wait to make this pattern as a quilt, but boy is it super cute as a cushion! And those colours again… ahhhhh rainbow!”
“Another pattern I have wanted to make for ages and seeing this bright and bold ‘Morocco’ by Alisa just pushed it to the top of the list. I love it!”
“This was a favourite of mine all the way through. The cushion back that was brilliant enough to be its own cushion! And that quilting… just delicious.”
“I just love the quilting on this one. I’m rather an expert on the ‘organic’ straight line quilting and seeing this has challenged me to consider expanding my options to mimic the design. Thank you for the inspiration!”
“Geese in the round… Curves in all the right places. This is a gorgeous cushion.”
“I’m rather in awe with this cushion. Circles kinda scare me and to get those geese perfectly aligned all the way around. My head just exploded! Brilliant!”
“Joanna’s use of Carolyn Friedlander is just superb! I love how bright and graphic this cushion is.”
“This cushion makes me want to put everything on point. And cut into my Carolyn Friedlander stash. After I buy more. Well done!”
“Brilliantly Colby. End of story.”
“Colby’s signature style really comes into play with this cushion. It is spectacular!”
We’re blown away by the amazing quality and creativity of the cushions that have been made for this competition. Thanks to everyone who entered!
So now it’s your turn to judge – which cushions would you have picked to win? (Sorry, no prizes for the people’s vote, just the warm fuzzy feeling of being loved!)
